    The Presidents of Senegal, Mali and Mauritania have agreed to set up a permanent commission to work out the detailed stages of the development of the massive River Senegal power and irrigation project. This was announced at the end of the leaders' fourth summit conference on the project which was held in Bamako, capital of Mali, last weekend (July 26).

    The three Presidents also announced that they would be establishing a special account to handle the funds for the scheme. The outgoing Chairman of the project, President Moktar Ould Daddah of Mauritania, said the project was "entering an era of concrete results".

    The project for exploiting the River Senegal includes plans for ???ydroelectric, irrigation and navigation schemes. It also envisages industrial projects which should be completed by 2001. A number of other countries, including The People's Republic of China, France, West Germany, Iran, Canada and Kuwait, have offered to participate in the project, either financially or with technical aid.
