  • Description

This summer, Slalom Canoeing will be included in the Olympic Games for the first time. To make it an event to remember, the Munich organisers have built the world's first completely artificial rough water slalom course.

It's part of the slalom stadium constructed at Augsburg, 30 minutes journey from Munich. The rough water course is fed from an existing canal. Artificial rapids and backwaters have been provided, and the depth of water over the course varies between 40 and 120 centimetres.

Water along the course is controlled by means to sluice gates, and the artificial obstacles will provide a severe test of the world's best canoeists. About 30,000 spectators can be seated along the course, a third of them in a new grandstand.
