    Among the 600 representatives at the four-day conference held at the Palais des Nations are observer delegations from Africa, Latin America, Arab countries, and Eastern Europe.

    The main aim of the congress is the reorganisation of the General Union of Algerian Workers so it can participate more directly in the management of state enterprises. The nationalisation of all private agricultural land was another major topic.

    The Congress comes at a particularly crucial time. President Boumedienne recently took over personal direction of the Algerian National Liberation Front and the country is entering on the last year of her four-year industrialisation plan. The trade union meeting precedes the summit conference on the tenth anniversary of the Organisation of African Unity, due to be held next month.

    Among the six-hundred representatives are observer delegations from labour federations in Africa, Latin America, Arab countries, and Eastern Europe.

    President Boumedienne called for an Arab offensive against Israel on a wider front. The representatives at the four-day conference discussed the reorganisation of the General Union of Algerian Workers, so it could participate more effectively in the management of state enterprises. The imminent nationalisation of all privately-owned agricultural land was another important topic.

    The Congress comes as President Boumedienne consolidates his direction of the country is entering the final year of a four-year industrialisation plan. It also foreshadows next month's meeting of the Organisation of African Unity.
