Background: Continuing his 'getting to know the country' tour, Field Marshal Hakim Amer, Governor of the Syrian Province of the United Arab Republic, visited Jebel Druz in southern Syria, Nov.25.
Accompanied by several provincial ministers, including those for villages and municipalities and agricultural reform, and commander-in-chief of the UAR 1st. Army, the newly-appointed governor met prominent members of the Druz community, headed by the leader and 1925-28 revolution commander, Sultan Atrash.
Schoolchildren, Scouts, Girl Guides, members of the National Unity party and hundred of peasants from in and around Jebel Druz's main town Suweida, welcomed the Field Marshal.
From the provincial government palace in Suweida Amer delivered a long speech to the crowd.
Appointed in Oct. as President Nasser's Syria deputy, Field Marshal Amer is responsible for Syrian government which has hitherto been centralised in Cairo.
