    POLICE CHARGED A CROWD OF 5,000 STUDENTS IN PARIS YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) WHO WERE SHOUTING FOR THE RESIGNATION OF PRESIDENT DE GAULLE AND EDUCATION MINISTER CHRISTIAN FOUCHET.

    THE RIOT OUTSIDE THE SORBONNE LASTED 45 MINUTES, DURING WHICH THE STUDENTS THREW STONES AND KNOCKED OFF HELMETS AS A CORDON OF BATON-ARMED POLICEMEN PUSHED THEM BACK."LET'S HAVE LECTURE HALLS INSTEAD OF GUNS," THEN SHOUTED.THE STUDENTS WERE COMPLAINING OVER CROWDED EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES AND HIGH RENTS FOR THEIR ACCOMMODATION.

    TROUBLE STARTED WHEN FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HISTORY THE STUDENTS WERE BANNED FROM A CEREMONY MARKING THEIR RETURN TO THE UNIVERSITY.M.FOUCHET WAS TO HAVE PRESIDED,BUT FAILED TO TURN UP.HIS PLACE WAS TAKEN BY THE YOUTH AND SPORTS MINISTER, MAURICE HERZOG; BUT HE WAS LOUDLY BOOED WHEN HE ARRIVED, FLANKED BY POLICEMEN.

    DURING THE DAY, THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY DEBATED THE EDUCATION BUDGET; THE OPPOSITION'S ATTACKS WERE THE MOST VIOLENT OF THE CURRENT SESSION, EXCEEDING ALL OTHERS IN BITTERNESS.
