    EAST AFRICA AND EUROPEAN COMMON MARKET REPRESENTATIVES YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) SIGNED A PREFERENTIAL TRADE AGREEMENT IN ARUSHA, TANZANIA. THE TREATY IS EXPECTED TO HELP GREATLY IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF AFRICAN COUNTRIES, AND HAS COME AFTER MORE THAN THREE YEARS OF INTERMITTENT NEGOTIATIONS IN BRUSSELS.

    THE TREATY IS BETWEEN KENYA, TANZANIA AND UGANDA ON THE ONE HAND, AND THE COMMON MARKET "SIX", BELGIUM, FRANCE, HOLLAND, ITALY, LUXEMBOURG AND WEST GERMANY.

    IT WILL ALLOW EAST AFRICAN GOODS FREE ENTRY TO EUROPE, IN RETURN FOR TARIFF CONCESSIONS FOR CERTAIN EUROPEAN ECONOMIC COMMUNITY PRODUCTS.

    THE AGREEMENT IS THE THIRD ENTERED INTO BY THE COMMON MARKET COUNTRIES IN AFRICA AND WILL COME INTO EFFECT ON THURSDAY, AUGUST 1.

    THE THREE EAST AFRICAN STATES ARE ALREADY LINKED IN THEIR OWN EAST AFRICAN COMMUNITY, AND THEIR NEW TREATY WILL ABOLISH CUSTOMS DUTY ON ALL BUT THREE EXPORTS TO EUROPE. THESE ARE COFFEE, CLOVES AND TINNED PINEAPPLE.
