VISNEWS Apl 20 filmed Her Majesty the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret on arrival at Rome's Ciampino Airport to begin a five-day private visit to the Italian capital. As they stepped from the 'Comet' aircraft into the pouring rain they were greeted by the British Ambassador and his wife, Sir Ashley and Lady Clarke, and in the Italian Premier Signor Segni.
Standing beneath umbrellas they shook hands with officials and personalities who had waited in the deluge to greet them. They then drove to the British Embassy where they will stay.
Near disaster was averted by skilful handling of the jet aircraft by the aircraft's captain Squadron Leader Peter Pullman as they came in to land. So dense and low were the blue-black clouds covering the sky that when the aircraft broke through the cloud on instrument approach it was too far up the runway to make a safe landing. Quick thinking manoeuvring by Squadron Leader Pullman enabled him to pull back into the cloud for a second approach.
Apart from a visit to His Holiness the Pope in the Vatican; the unveiling of the Byron memorial in the Villa Borghese and the new font and lectern in St Andrew's Church of Scotland, the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret have no official engagements.
