  • Description

At least five people were reported dead on Saturday (7 October) in western and central Virginia when floods followed torrential rains.

Hardest hit was the city of Richmond, which suffered millions of dollars damage in a tropical storm last June.

The James river, which runs through the centre of Richmond flooded the downtown area and caused merchants heavy losses.

SYNOPSIS: In the American state of Virginia, the James river is in flood after days of torrential rain.

The city of Richmond, damaged severely in a tropical storm last June, took the brunt again.

But the damage would have been worse if the river had reached its expected peak. President Nixon declared Virginia a disaster area after five deaths were reported in three days of rain.
