  • Description

The X-18, a research vehicle being used as a research tool to establish standards for a dependable vertical and short take-off and landing aircraft, (VTOL) and '(STOL), made its first flight July 25 from the US Air Force Flight Centre, California.

Sixteen foot counter-rotating props, and Allison turbo-prop engines supply the power. To attain vertical flight, the 18 foot wing rotates to the up position and the X-18 virtually becomes a helicopter. This unusual craft is a composite of "off-the-shelf" items. There unusual craft is a composite of Fuselage from an old C-122, standard engines and props. The first conversion from conventional to helicopter performance will be attempted at 15,000 feet altitude later in the test program.

The X-18, a study to provide design for a vertical and short take-off and landing aircraft.
