  • Description

United States Labour loader George Meany announced on Wednesday (19 July) that the 14,000,000 American trade unionists he represents will endorse neither Senator McGovern nor Present Nixon in the forthcoming November presidential elections.

Mr Meany, President of the AFL CIO Trade Union Confederation, told a press conference in Washington that a three-hour meeting of his 30-strong executive council had voted 37 to three in favour of not endorsing either candidate in the pending election battle.

The announcement came as a particularly unwelcome blow to Senator McGovern, who is relying heavily on the working man's vote. But while he was disappointed that the powerful AFL-CIO would not endorse his candidacy, he was quick to point out that its actions did actions bind individual unions. He said he was confident rank-end-file members would side with him when election time actually came, and pointed out that some unions had already come over to his side.
