Background: In an age of soaring petrol prices most car manufacturers are producing vehicles with a low fuel consumption. But a small car firm in Italy is building cars worth more than 20,000 pounds sterling (41,000 U.S. dollars) that run on a petrol consumption of less than ten miles (16 kms) a gallon ... and the demand for the cars is now outstripping production.

The car is called the Stutz Blackhawk and it is the most expensive car in the world after the British built Rolls-Royce Camargue. It is produced in a former barn in the small medieval town of Cavallermaggiore in northern Italy.

The demand for the car comes from a very rich and exclusive clientele such as the United States' entertainers, Elvis Presley and Dean Martin, and Middle East oil sheikhs.

The cars are produced by 35 of the last surviving craftsmen in the Italian motor industry. They turn out only five vehicles a month from their converted barn.

The exclusive car is the brainchild of American investment banker, Mr. James O'Donnell.

The chassis and engines are made by the United States car manufacturers, General Motors and are shipped to Italy where the car is built and then shipped back to the United States. Mr. O'Donnell says this method is "cheaper in the long run" than building the vehicles in the United States.

The body of each car is made from special heavy steel and the instruments are rimmed with eighteen carat gold... which also plates the cigarette lighter. The seats are covered in thick heavy leather imported from England. You can have the floor covers in either thick New Zealand wool....or mink.

Despite the high cost and enormous fuel bills demand is now outstripping production for this Italian built "supercar".
