Background: Defending champion Tony Jacklin of Britain was sharing second place with Jack Nicklaus of the United States after a tense second day of the British Open Golf Championship at St Andrew's in Scotland on Thursday (9 July). American Lee Trevino led the field at the end of the second round -- just one shot ahead of Jacklin and Nicklaus.
After leading the field with a record breaking of 65 on Wednesday. British player Neil coles had a two-over-par round of 74 on the second day. He shares third place with three other British players -- Clive Clark, Tommy Horton, and John Richardson, South African Harold Hennings and American Doug Saunders. Their two-round total is 138.
Jacklin, who won the United States Open Championship already this year, carded a 90 for a two round total of 137. His first round was interrupted on Wednesday night by a thunderstorm, but steady play in the strong cross winds on the course brought him the second equal place. Nicklaus had a second round card of 69.
The American challenge for the title grows as Nicklaus, Saunders, and Arnold Palmer edge nearer the top. Trevino went round the course in 68 on Thursday, to lead with a two-round total of 136 -- eight under par.
