    THE DEEP-DIVING BATHYSCAPH "TRIESTE" IS CURRENTLY SEARCHING FOR THE WRECKAGE OF THE SUNKEN ATOMIC SUBMARINE "THRESHER" WHICH SANK ON APRIL 10 DURING A DEEP-DIVING TEST KILLING THE 129 PEOPLE ABOARD.

    THE BATHYSCAPH IS SEARCHING IN AN AREA MEASURING 250 BY 2,000 YARDS ABOUT 220 MILES EAST OF BOSTON, AT A DEPTH OF 8,400 FEET.ALL SHIPPING HAS BEEN WARNED TO KEEP CLEAR OF THE SEARCH AREA, BUT FIVE RUSSIAN SHIPS HAVE DISREGARDED THIS WARNING AND SAILED CLOSE BY.

    THE JOB ASSIGNED TO THE "TRIESTE" IS TO ATTEMPT TO SUBMERGE NEAR THE SUBMARINE AND, THROUGH CAMERAS AND ITS TWO-MAN CREW, FIND THE "THRESHER" AND DETERMINE ITS CONDITION.

    CAPTAIN FRANK A.ANDREWS, IN CHARGE OF SEARCH OPERATIONS, SAID IN A SHIPBOARD INTERVIEW RECENTLY THAT HOPES OF FINDING THE SUBMARINE HAVE BEEN RAISED BY THE DISCOVERY OF DEBRIS AT ITS LAST KNOW POSITION.AMONG THE DEBRIS FOUND SO FAR IS A BATTERY PLATE OF TYPE USED ONLY IN THRESHER-CLASS SUBMARINES.HE SAID ALSO, THAT RESEARCH VESSELS HAVE PHOTOGRAPHED A SHEET OF METAL MEASURING ABOUT 120 SQUARE FEET, SOME PIPING, AND AN AIR BOTTLE -- ALL ON THE OCEAN BOTTOM.

    SO FAR THE "TRIESTE", SERVICED BY HER MOTHER SHIP, HAS NOT REPORTED FINDING ANYTHING OF SIGNIFICANCE.
