The game had the makings of one of the finest ever seen in Spanish football. Four of Europe's top players barcelona faced each other in their Spanish soccer league match on Sunday (January 5).
Involved were Johann Cruyff, voted top European player of 1974 and another Dutch World Cup player Johann Neeskens wearing the Barcelona shirts. Opposing them were West German World Cup stars Paul Breitner and Gunther Netzer playing for Real Madrid.
Real had not won at home against Barcelona for five years, and with Cruyff and Neekens against them it seemed they were unlikely to break the drought.
But Cruyff was kept out of the game by Real right back Jose Camacho and Neeskens never settled down.
But for a game which promised so much it was ironic that Real won through an own goal by Barcelona loft back Jesus de la Cruz who slipped the Ball past his goalkeeper while trying to clear in the 45th minute. It was the only goal of the match.
