  • Description

Israeli Foreign Minister Moshe Dayan, on his first official visit to West Germany, has urged the international community to help the cause of Middle East Peace by backing Egypt. Speaking in Bonn on Monday (November 28) he said: "Egypt and its allies now need moral and political support, and we hope they will not be disappointed".

SYNOPSIS: Mr. Dayan was in Bonn for three days of talks with West German political leaders. His first formal meeting with Chancellor Helmut Schmidt was at the Chancellory, and there was plenty of security in evidence..
Armoured vehicles and armed troops were out to make sure there was no trouble, when the Israeli Foreign Minister flew in from Hamburg. He had spent Sunday as guest of the City Government, and had also visited the former Nazi concentration camp in Bergen-Belsen near Hannover.

The meeting with Chancellor Schmidt came after Mr. Dayan had talks with Economics Minister, Count Otto Lamsdorff. And according to Reuter, quoting informed sources, the Israeli Foreign Minister was told during these discussions that West Germany sees the future of the Palestinians as the central problem in any Middle East peace settlement.

Mr. Dayan, however, told his hosts that although Israel was prepared to participate in peace talks without pre-conditions, it would not negotiate with the Palestinian Liberation Organisation. And in a later television interview he critised the policies of the United States and members of the European Economic Community. He said: "You should not try to solve our problems and tell us what to do."
