  • Description

Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi has warned that if the proposed merger between Egypt and his country was delayed "dangerous developments are likely to happen."
Colonel Gaddafi was speaking to Egyptian journalists on Friday (29 June) on his return to Cairo after four days of intensive talks with President Anwar Sadat of Egypt in Alexandria.

Unity between the two countries is scheduled to take place in September, but Colonel Gaddafi expressed fears that this unity would never take place. He described the merger as "a matter of destiny" but, he said "the date of the merger is approaching yet it seems that nothing is taking place at all. It seems it will be merely a political decision like any other agreement".

The Libyan leader said he feared that the merger would be as fragile as that between Syria and Egypt if the peoples of both countries were not actively involved in the change.

Observers in Cairo believe that the September merger date is likely to be cancelled, unless the two leaders agree to merge in principle and then work out the detailed rules and regulations at a later stage.
