    MORE THAN 5-THOUSAND MEN AND WOMEN FROM JAPAN'S DEFENCE FORCES PUT ON A PARADE IN TOKYO LAST SUNDAY (NOV. 2). THE PARADE INCLUDED SOPHISTICATED WEAPONS AND GROUND-TO-GROUND MISSILES.

    THE PARADE AT MEIJI PARK, IN TOKYO, WAS HELD BEFORE THE PRIME MINISTER, MR. EISAKU SATO, THE MINISTER FOR DEFENCE, MR. ARITA, AND MEMBERS OF THE CABINET.

    JAPAN'S DEFENCE FORCE OF 2-HUNDRED AND 60-THOUSAND IS SMALL WHEN COMPARED WITH THE ARMED FORCES OF SOUTH KOREA, TAIWAN AND SOUTH VIETNAM -- BUT IT DRAINS 15 PER CENT OF THE NATIONAL INCOME.

    HOWEVER, JAPAN HAS REPEATEDLY REFUSED A CALL BY THE UNITED STATES TO ENLARGE ITS DEFENCE FORCES, CLAIMING IT WOULD CREATE A BAD IMPRESSION WITH NEIGHBOURING COUNTRIES.

    THE UNITED STATES MADE THE CALL IN THE MAKE OF ITS PROPOSED WITHDRAWAL FROM OKINAWA, SCHEDULED FOR 1972. IN JAPAN YOUNG PEOPLE, THE LABOUR UNIONS, AND POLITICAL PARTIES AND AGAINST EXPANSION OF THE ARMED FORCES.
