  • Description

Britain's biggest fishing vessel, Associated Fisheries' 1,400-ton refrigerated trawler "Lord Nelson", was launched at Bremerhaven, West Germany, Jan 14. She was launched by Frau Rickmers, wife of the owner of the yard.

The "Lord Nelson" (named after Britain's famous admiral of H.M.S. Victory and Battle of Trafalgar fame) cost about GBP400,000; and is the first trawler of her kind to be assigned for freezing half her catch while still at sea.

She is the first distant-water stern fisher. British trawler owners, recognising that a new fishing technique must be developed, are currently carrying out plans for modernisation and re-equipment. And other "freeze ships" are now on order.
