  • Description

Visnews filmed June 15 at Ankmaly, Kerala, the funeral procession for the five people killed when police opened fire in the recent disturbance in the State - the only one in India with a Communist Government. Besides the dead, about twenty people were wounded - some seriously. Those killed were all of the Christian faith.

According to a local report the demonstration which gave rise to the shooting was organised by a temperance movement and was not connected with the Opposition campaign in Kerala to oust the Communist Government. Many people claimed the shooting was unjustified. According to an official statement from Kerala, however, the demonstration was connected with the anti-Government campaign, and the police were forced to open fire when threatened by an angry mob.

On June 22 Mr. Nehru is to begin a four-day visit to Kerala for talks with political leaders on the unrest in the State.
