  • Description

SPECIAL INTERNATIONAL PAVILIONS CONTAINING EXHIBITIONS OF PANELS, PAINTINGS AND STATUES OF THE LATE MAHATMA GANDHI, ARE ONLY ONE PART OF THE NATION-WIDE COMMEMORATIVE CELEBRATIONS ON THE OCCASION OF THE CENTENARY OF THE BIRTH OF THE INDIAN LEADER. YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY), PRIME MINISTER INDIRA GANDHI SPOKE BEFORE 200,000 INDIANS GATHERED AT THE OPENING OF THE "GANDHI DARSHAN" (SEEING GANDHI) EXHIBITION IN NEW DELHI. BUT AN AGEING LEADER, KHAN ABDUL GHAFFAR KHAN, HAS ANNOUNCED HE IS GOING ON A HUNGER STRIKE IN PROTEST AGAINST THE VIOLENCE WHICH GANDHI ABHORED - AND WHICH TODAY SWEEPS INDIA.

ONE OF THE MOST IMPRESSIVE EXHIBITS WAS A MODEL OF SEWAGRAM SHARAM, THE VILLAGE WHERE GANDHI LIVED AND WORKED, OVERSHADOWED BY A HUGE STATUE OF THE MAHATMA (GREAT SOUL).

THE EXHIBITS SHOWED GANDHI'S IDEALS OF PEACE, RELIGIOUS HARMONY AND NON-VIOLENCE. BUT, IN HER SPEECH, MRS. GANDHI ADMITTED THAT THE HINDU-MOSLEM RIOTS WHICH LAST WEEK HAD TORN THROUGH THE MAHATMA'S HOME STATE OF GUJARAT "HAVE MADE A MOCKERY OF OUR CELEBRATIONS".

THE EXHIBITION WAS TO HAVE BEEN OPENED BY KHAN ABDUL GHAFFAR KHAN, THE 80-YEAR-OLD PATHAN LEADER WHO HAD RETURNED FROM EXILE FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE INDIA'S INDEPENDENCE, BUT THE STRENUOUS JOURNEY FROM HIS HOME IN REMOTE KABUL PROVED TOO MUCH FOR HIM - AND DOCTORS FORBADE HIM TO APPEAR.

BUT TODAY, THE AGEING LEADER OF PAKHTOONISTAN - FOR THE PAKHTOONS OR PATHANS OF NORTHWEST PAKISTAN AND PARTS OF AFGHANISTAN - ANNOUNCED THAT HE WOULD GO ON A THREE-DAY HUNGER STRIKE IN PROTEST AGAINST THE VIOLENCE, MUTUAL HATRED AND COMMUNAL HOSTILITY AMONG INDIANS, ALSO STRUGGLED AGAINST DURING HIS LIFE.
