  • Description

Ten thousand Communist demonstrators shouted their support (SOF) August 3 outside the Parliament building in New Delhi as the Communist deputy leader A.K. Gopalan attacked the Government over its intervention in Kerala.

Carrying red banners, they shouted slogans: Democracy in peril and Nehruism will not last long. The demonstration by the Indian Communist Party at the start of a nationwide protest was one of the biggest held before the Parliament building since India became an independent republic 1947.

Communist members in parliament the same day walked out of a session of the Lower House in protest over the Kerala state government's dismissal July 31. The State Administration is now under President Prasad's rule.

The death toll in disturbances in the State in the past six weeks rose to 16 at the weekend when one Indian was killed and 14 injured in Communist and non-Communist clashes.
