Background: In Damascus, Syrians went to the polls on Friday (12th, March) to elect a president for a seven year term. The plebiscite was the first for thirteen years.
The only candidate for the presidency was 43-year-old Lieutenant-General Hafez Al-Assad, who had been nominated by the Baath Party's provisional leadership and whose candidature was unanimously approved by the people's council.
An almost unanimous 'YES' was expected from the voters.
