  • Description

CRIPPLED SPORTSMEN AND WOMEN GATHERED IN BUENOS AIRES THIS WEEK FOR THEIR OWN ATHLETIC COMPETITION -- THE SECOND ANNUAL PAN-AMERICAN WHEEL CHAIR GAMES. THE COMPETITORS -- THEY INCLUDE ARCHERS, DISCUS AND JAVELIN THROWERS, SHOT-PUTTERS AND SWIMMERS, ARE ALL PARAPLEGICS.

THERE WERE COMPETITORS FROM THE UNITED STATES, CANADA, BRAZIL, CHILE, ARGENTINA, URUGUAY, PARAGUAY, PERU AND OTHER LATIN AMERICAN COUNTRIES.

IN THE FIRST DAY'S COMPETITIONS (MONDAY 1 DEC.) UNITED STATES ENTRANTS WON SIX GOLD MEDALS, MOST OF THEM IN THE ARCHERY.

DESPITE THEIR HANDICAPS, THE CONTESTANTS SHOWED A VERVE AND A SPIRIT OF SPORTING RIVALRY TO EQUAL THAT OF FULLY ABLE ATHLETES.

FROM THEIR WHEEL CHAIRS THE DISCUS AND JAVELIN THROWERS ACHIEVED IMPRESSIVE DISTANCES, AND THE ARCHERS WERE WELL ON TARGET. AS FOR SWIMMERS, IT WAS HARD TO TELL THAT EXTENT OF THEIR DISABILITIES AS THEY FORGED THROUGH THE WATER.
