Background: London, known throughout the world for its association with the River Thames, is perhaps the only city in the world which lives with its back to a river. Although the Thames is synonymous with London, very little use is made of the city's waterways for pleasure.

But only a couple of miles from the rush and bustle of traffic around Marble Arch lies one of the most peaceful and insular of areas in London.

Because it lies on the old Regents Canal, the area is called Little Venice, in honour of its canal-bound namesake in Italy. Each year the citizens of Little Venice stage a boatshow to celebrate their fortune.

From the terraced-houses around the canal people move towards the water to celebrate their annual festival.

This year the organisers are celebrating the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the Regents Canal and the Little Venice Basin.

As well as the boating carnival and exhibitions of boating craft and underwater displays -- the festival also includes music and art exhibitions.
