Sudanese President Jaafar Nimeiri has been to Syria for talks with President Hafez Al-Assad. The visit is seen as a bid to heal the rift in the Arab world, caused by Egyptian President Anwar Sadat's recent Middle East peace moves.
SYNOPSIS: At Damascus airport, President Nimeiri was greeted by his Syrian counterpart, President Assad and other officials. His visit followed a two day stay in Egypt, where he had lengthy discussions with President Sadat.
President Nimeiri's visit is part of a tour of a Arab states, aimed at bringing the arab world closed together, following the rift caused by President Sadat's Middle East peace initiative. He is being accompanied on his reconciliation tour by Mr. Mahmoud Riad, Secretary General of the Arab League.
No official statement was released after President Nimeiri's talks with Syrian leader. But Reuter report that Syria is unwilling to be a party to reconciliation attempts, unless President Sadat denounces his recent peace efforts as a failure. President Assad has been reported as saying that relations should be restored between Egypt and other Arab states so that total Arab solidarity could be levied against Israel. But he is unwilling to attend an Arab summit while President Sadat continues with what the Syrian government-controlled press call his capitulationist policies.
