  • Description

Pan American World Airways, having lost a 747 Jumbo jet in the current wave of hijackings, says it is prepared to consider the use of "Sky marshals" to protect company airliners from hijackers.

Mr. Najeeb Halaby, President of Pan Am told a press conference in New York shortly after returning from talks with Government officials in Washington that he understood airline pilots were prepared to consider the use of "Sky-Marshals" on international flights.

Observers said it was certain that the "Sky-Marshals" would be armed.

The proposal to use guards on board international flights came out of the meeting of representatives of major world airlines in Washington to discuss anti-hijacking security measures.

The talks went on as the White House continued urgent negotiations to free the 188 airline passengers held hostage by Arab guerillas in the Jordanian desert.
