Background: THE BY-ELECTION AIN HULL NORTH WAS WON TODAY (THURSDAY) BY THE LABOUR CANDIDATE, MR. KEVIN MCNAMARA. HE BEAT THE CONSERVATIVE CANDIDATE BY 5.351 VOTES -- MORE THAN 4,000 VOTES UP ON LABOUR'S MAJORITY IN THE SAME CONSTITUENCY IN THE 1964 GENERAL ELECTION. AFTER THE DECLARATION OF THE RESULT, MR. MCNAMARA TOLD THE CROWD THAT IT WAS A GREAT VOTE OF CONFIDENCE IN THE LABOUR GOVERNMENT.

VOTING WAS VERY HEAVY THROUGHOUT THE DAY. THE POLL WAS CONSIDERED CRUCIAL BY ALL THE THREE MAIN PARTIES. A DEFEAT FOR THE LABOUR PARTY WOULD HAVE MEAN THAT THEIR MAJORITY IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS WAS REDUCED TO ONE.

SOME GOVERNMENT MINISTERS HAVE BEEN URGING THE PRIME MINISTER TO CALL A GENERAL ELECTION.

A LITTLE LESS THAN THREE HOURS AFTER THE POLLING STATIONS CLOSED THE ACTING RETURNING OFFICER FOR HULL NORTH ROSE TO DECLARE THE RESULT --
