Background: A number of Uganda Asians holding British passports were finally admitted to Britain on Sunday (June 28) after a journey which began in Uganda several weeks ago.

For two weeks the 96 Uganda Asians were stranded in Yugoslavia unable either to return to Uganda or either Britain.

They staged a sit-in demonstration at the British Embassy in Belgrade before being granted permits to enter the country in parties for a period of three months.

Other East Africans in Copenhagen, Paris and Brussels are expected to be granted similar permits and about 60 detained in Britain are likely to be released on the same basis.

The Home Office announced on Saturday that Yugoslavia and other European countries are to refuse entry to East African Asians with British passports unless the holders can produce evidence that they are admissible to Britain.

There are said to be almost 800 known cases of Asian families holding British passports-nearly 3,000 people in all - who want to enter the country.

On July 13, the European Commission of Human Rights in Strasbourg will decide on the admissibility of 69 cases involving the denial of entry to East African Asians. Most of the cases are of men wanting to join their families in Britain.
