  • Description

Civilians and armed forces joined in a huge parade on Saturday (August 29) through the streets of Alma-Ata to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

One of the 15 countries making up the Soviet Union, Kazakhstan shares a 900-mile (1.400 kilometre) border with China, and was the scene of a frontier clash last year. Alma-Ata, the capital is only 200 miles (300 km) from the Chinese border.

The parade was watched by General Secretary of the Soviet Communist Party, Mr Leonid Brezhnev, and Defence Minister Marshal Andrei Grechko. Local farmers and workers marched in costumes of the revolution, through streets lined by thousands of onlookers.

The parade also included a representation of modern Soviet Military might, with soldiers, tanks and rocket-launchers.

Addressing a mass rally in Alma-Ata, Mr Brezhnev said that the Soviet Union was ready to do all in its power to normalise relations with the People's Republic of China. Regarding the split between the two Communist parties, he said that the Soviet Government would continue to try and find a mutually acceptable solution to the questions under discussion.
