    Damage by hand grenades, plastic ammunition and other weapons remained as the aftermath of a surprising attack by North Vietnamese troops on Sunday (30 August) on an undefended Buddhist orphanage at An Hoa.

    The 65 orphans in the building were said to be sound asleep when the attack came, the attacker having only to cross an open vegetable garden to reach their objective.

    Survivors said the attackers wore helmets and uniforms, indicating they were North Vietnamese regulars.

    The district chief, when asked why the institution was undefended, is reported to have said, "No-one thought they would attack an orphanage.
