  • Description

Visnews filmed June 9 the bye-election in Sekyere West Constituency, which was won by Mr. S.A. Kwaku Bonus of the Convention People's Party - Ghana's governing party. Voting took place at Ashanti Mampong.

Mr. Bonzu, a Kumasi Barrister, had a majority of more than 5,000 over his only opponent, Mr. Kwasi Agyarko, of the Opposition United Party. Altogether about 16,000 votes were cast.

The bye-election followed the detention by the Government last year - under Ghana's new Preventive Detention Act - of Mr. Amponsah, the member for Sekyere West Constituency and General Secretary of the United Party.

A three-man commission of enquiry set up by the Ghana Government found recently that Mr. Amponsah, with three other men, had been engaged in a conspiracy to assassinate the Prime Minister, Dr. Nkrumah, and stage a coup d'etat.
