World Cup football -- and the first leg of the qualifying game between England and Italy in Rome on Wednesday (17 November).

SYNOPSIS: The game in the Italian capital was a major step for both sides in their attempts to reach the finals of the World Cup in Argentina in 1978. Neither side took charge of the game in the first half hour, although Italy missed at least one chance of scoring. Them England defender Roy McFarland fouled Franco Causio just outside the England penalty area.

From the resulting free kick, Causio touched the ball to Giancarlo Antognoni whose shot was deflected into the net off England player, Kevin Keegan, to give Italy a one-nil lead.

The score remained one-nil to Italy at half time, but clever inter-passing by the Italians in the second half threatened to produce more goals. England also began to attack more and also looked capable of scoring the equalizing goal.

Only a great save by Italian goalkeeper Dino Zoff prevented Trevor Cherry from scoring for England.

England continued to attack, but their hopes for a win or draw shattered in the 78th minute of the match. Benetti passed to Causio who returned the ball to Benetti on the left and his superb cross allowed Roberto Bettega to head the ball past Ray Clemence.

The two goal win gave Italy the lead in group two with four points from two games. England also have four points but have played three games.
