  • Description

The Secretary of the Navy announced today the end of the traditional enlisted man's "jumper, bell bottom trousers and white hat." They will be replaced by a standard uniform for all Navy men from Seaman to Admiral.

The new Service Dress Blue uniform will be worn with white shirt, black tie and combination caps. Each rank and rate will maintain their distinctive insignia. Enlisted men will retain their tropical whites as well as their blue working uniforms.

The Service Dress Khaki uniforms will be eliminated for officers and Chief Petty Officers will not be required to have either Service Dress Khaki or Service Dress Whites. All will be replaced with the Summer Weight Service Dress Blues. All Navy men will retain their Tropical Whites and officers and Chiefs will retain their tropical Khakis. Enlisted men will also retain the peajacket.

Because of necessary changes and the time required to manufacture the new uniforms, it is expected that they will not be made available until July 1973. At that time the Navy will begin to issue the new uniforms to recruits, and the uniforms will became optional for all active duty enlisted men. It is forecast that new uniforms will become mandatory by July 1975.
