  • Description

Large crowds of French Communists gave Soviet Communist Party leader, Leonid Brezhnev, an enthusiastic reception in Paris on Wednesday evening (27 October), when he visited the house where Lenin, the founder of the soviet state, spent three years of political exile.

As he stood on the apartment building's second floor balcony, Mr. Brezhnev received a warm reception--contrasting with the relatively cool welcome given by Parisians when he arrived on Monday for a six-day visit.

Earlier in the day, the Soviet leader met with French President Georges Pompidou. French and Soviet views on an early European conference on security and cooperation are very close, it was reported, after nine hours of talks between the two leaders. Shortly before Mr. Brezhnev and Mr. Pompidou began their discussions, the two countries signed a ten-year economic agreement, which could boost their trade exchanges.
