  • Description

FOUR THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED SERVICEMEN TOOK PART YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) IN A JAPANESE SELF-DEFENCE FORCES MILITARY PARADE IN TOKYO, WATCHED BY JAPAN'S PRIME MINISTER, MR. EISAKU SATO. NAVAL, ARMY AND AIR FORCE UNITS WERE INCLUDED IN THE PARADE.

JAPAN'S SELF DEFENCE FORCE TOTALS 250,000 MEN BUT IT WILL NOT BE INCREASED BECAUSE OF ARTICLE NINE OF THE JAPANESE CONSTITUTION IN WHICH THE COUNTRY RENOUNCES THE THREAT OR USE OF FORCE TO SETTLE INTERNATIONAL DISPUTES. IT ALSO RENOUNCES WAR AS A SOVEREIGN RIGHT OF THE NATION.

THE AIM OF YESTERDAY'S PARADE WAS TO SHOW HOW THE COUNTRY HAS MODERNISED AND MECHANISED ITS DEFENCE FORCES TO KEEP ITS OWN SHORES SAFE. THE MEN OF THE ARMED FORCES ARE ALL VOLUNTEERS.

JAPAN'S LARGEST DESTROYER IS 3,000 TONS AND THE NAVY'S TOTAL STRENGTH 130,000 TONS. THE AIR FORCE HAS 900 AIRCRAFT INCLUDING 200 JET FIGHTERS.

IN HIS ADDRESS TO THE SELF DEFENCE FORCES PERSONNEL, MR. SATO SAID THEY SHOULD HAVE THE PRESTIGE AND DIGNITY TO CARRY OUT THEIR TASKS AND TO MAINTAIN THEIR HIGH DISCIPLINE.

TWENTY THOUSAND PEOPLE WERE INVITED TO THE PARADE AS WELL AS FOREIGN DIPLOMATS AND ARMED FORCES OFFICIALS. MR. KASHICHI MASUDA, THE MINISTER IN CHARGE OF SELF DEFENCE BOARD, ACCOMPANIED THE PRIME MINISTER ON THE INSPECTION PLATFORM.
