  • Description

A NUMBER OF STUDENTS STAGED A NOISY BUT ORDERLY "SIT-DOWN STRIKE" AT THE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE IN NAIROBI, KENYA, YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) TO PROTEST AGAINST THE AUTHORITIES' REFUSAL TO ALLOW MR. OGINGA ODINGA, THE OPPOSITION LEADER, TO ADDRESS STUDENTS THAT NIGHT. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME PERMISSION FOR MR. ODINGA TO MAKE A SPEECH AT THE UNIVERSITY HAS BEEN REFUSED.

A COLLEGE INSTRUCTOR SAID ALL FORMALITIES HAD BEEN COMPLIED WITH FOR MR. ODINGA'S APPEARANCE, BUT IN SPITE OF THAT THE AUTHORITIES REFUSED TO GIVE PERMISSION FOR HIM TO SPEAK THERE. THE STUDENTS PLAN TO PETITION THE MINISTER OF EDUCATION NEXT TUESDAY. THEY SAY THAT UNTIL THEY ARE GRANTED AN INTERVIEW BY THE MINISTER THEY WILL REFUSE TO ENTER THEIR CLASSROOMS, OR CONTINUE THEIR STUDIES IN ANY WAY WHATEVER.
