  • Description

Czechoslovakia - the "dark horses" of the World Ice Hockey Championships in Calo - continued their bid for top honours with a sweeping 7-1 victory over Poland on March 3rd.

Winners of the world title in 1947 and 1949, the Czechs disappeared from the international hockey scene when a large number of their players sought political asylum during a European tour.

A number of those who later returned to Czechoslovakia were arrested and imprisoned.

Since then the Czechs have been slowly building up a new team and are rapidly developing into one of the best of the many European international teams.

Just before the present world championships the Czechs went on a feet-finding hockey tour and played a number of Canadian teams in the British League - learning a number of new playing moves in the process.

Now they have an outside chance of winning the world title again after causing one of the first major "upsets" in the world series. Playing against Soviet Russia on the day after their victory over the Poles. Czechoslovakia managed to hold the USSR team to a 4-4 draw after being 3-1 down in the first period.

This left Canada and Sweden the only teams with 100% records and made Canada outstanding favourites for the title currently held by the Swedes.

But, if the Czechs do not take the major award, it is still possible that they will take the prize awarded to the least penalised team in the series. At the time of writing they had the cleanest record followed by the USA, Poland, Canada and the USSR.
