  • Description

MR. PATRICK GORDON WALKER, BRITAIN'S SPECIAL ENVOY CURRENTLY TOURING SOUTH-EAST ASIA, VISITED TWO GOVERNMENT-SUPPORTED STRATEGIC HAMLETS NORTH-EAST OF SAIGON ON SUNDAY. THE FORMER BRITISH FOREIGN MINISTER WAS ON A TWO-DAY VISIT TO SOUTH VIETNAM.

THE STRATEGIC VILLAGES WERE SET UP BY THE GOVERNMENT TO GIVE THE VILLAGERS PROTECTION FROM VIETCONG ATTACKS. ONE OF THE TWO VISITED BY MR. GORDON WALKER WAS THE TAY NINH VILLAGE, ABOUT 120 MILES (196 KILOMETRES) NORTH-EAST OF SAIGON. TAY NINH IS PREDOMINANTLY A CATHOLIC VILLAGE WHICH HOUSES REFUGEES FROM NORTH VIETNAM. THE VILLAGE HAS ITS OWN DEFENCE FORCE WORKING CLOSELY WITH GOVERNMENT FORCES AND AMERICAN MILITARY ADVISORS.

MR. GORDON WALKER WAS ACCOMPANIED BY THE BRITISH AMBASSADOR, MR. G.K. ETHERINGTON-SMITH, ON HIS TOUR OF THE VILLAGE. HE WAS GIVEN A ROUSING WELCOME BY THE CHILDREN WHO SHOUTED "OKAY" -- THE ONLY ENGLISH WORD THEY KNEW.

BEFORE LEAVING FOR CAMBODIA, MR. PATRICK GORDON WALKER SAID HE WAS RATHER MORE HOPEFUL THAN WHEN HE LEFT LONDON ABOUT PROSPECTS FOR PEACE TALKS ON THE VIETNAM CRISIS. ALTHOUGH HE DIDN'T GIVE A REASON FOR THIS STATEMENT IT IS THOUGHT THAT HE WAS HEARTENED BY SOUTH VIETNAM'S IMPLIED WILLINGNESS TO ATTEND A CONFERENCE ON CAMBODIA'S NEUTRALITY AND INDEPENDENCE.
