    The West German President Gustav Heinemann had a private conversation and exchanged gifts with Pope Paul during a three-hour official visit to the Vatican on Monday (26 March).

    President Heinemann had ended a two-day state visit to Italy on Thursday (22 March). Since then he had been on private visits to Ravenna and Venice.

    After the 45-minute private conversation, President Heinemann's wife Hilda, and the West German Foreign Minister Walter School, were presented to the Pope.

    The President was dressed in a black tail coat and wore the insignia of the order of Pius IX, which is reserved for foreign heads of state. The Vatican's Deputy Secretary of State, Monsignor Giovanni Benelli, presented the order to Herr Heinemann at his Rome hotel on Sunday (25 March) night.

    The Pontiff gave President Heinemann a painting of the 16th century Venetian school depicting episodes in the life of Saint Ursula, and to Frau Heinemann he presented a gold cross.

    The West German President gave Pope a small onyx status. A West German official said that the President had also given the Pope a cheque for 50,000 marks (over 7,000 pounds sterling) for Catholic relief to the Third World. During his speech the Pontiff thanked the West German people for their "Genuine Christian charity" over the years to developing countries.
