Background: Enthroned before Michaelangelo's Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel, Vatican, October 30, Pope John 23 received the third obeisance of the cardinals who elected him.
One by one, scarlet-robed Princes of the Church kneeled to kiss his hand and the rim of his white robe in the chapel which he entered on October 25 at Angelo Giuseppe Cardinal Roncalli, equal of the cardinals now kneeling before him.
Forty-nine cardinals were present at the 35-minute ceremony, the last of the three "adorations" required by age-old church law to symbolize the cardinals' loyalty to their new spiritual leader.
Excused from attending this ceremony was Chinese Cardinal Thomas Tien Ken-Sin, still bedridden following a two-month old car accident, and 86-year-old Cardinal Dalla Costa of Florence.
As Pope John received the homage of the cardinals the Papal choir of the Sistine Chapel intoned the "Tu es Petrus" by Palestrina.
Then the solemn strains of a "Te Deum" echoed through the chapel. The Pope bent forward to embrace each cardinal and murmur a few words of intimate greeting. At the end of the ceremony the Pope retired to the noble apartment to continue the audience to well-wishers which kept him busy most of the day.
