  • Description

In Argentina the fishing season is underway and the annual competition to catch the biggest trout has begun.

SYNOPSIS: In the province of Neuquen is the town of Junin de Andes. It's near to the lakes and mountains some 1500 kilometres from the capital Buenos Aires and regarded by connoisseurs of trouts as one of the richest areas in the world. A competition last weekend was keenly contested by both local and other fishermen. It's one of several throughout the season. The aim, naturally, is to catch the biggest fish.

There are strict rules governing the competition and each contestant can land only four fish in one day. There is also a time limit.

One of the first catches of the day weighed four kilometres (nine pounds). But there are claims of trout as big as 10 kilometres (23 pounds) having been caught here. In the streams and lakes around Junin de Los Andes there are abundant quantities of brown and rainbow trout.

People who can afford it fly in from all over the world just to spend their holiday fishing in Argentina. There's also the attraction of rich hunting in this area. At the end of the day the catches are weighed, the winner declared and the time has come to talk about the ones that got away.
