Background: The winter fashions of Baratta and Fontana shown in Rome on Sunday (18 July) heralded the winter follow-up to hot pants--the pant-coats. An eye-catching series of creations based on knickerbockers worn with long coats, stressed elegance and refinement, as did the floor-length, flared dresses with plunging neck-lines. But as the designers prepare the winter fashion scene, the girls of Rome are wearing only the tightest and flimsiest hot pants and see-through blouses. Their concern is still the summer.
SYNOPSIS: The winter collection of Baratta on Rome was shown in the grand Hotel on Sunday. Baratta's creations heralded the return of the civilised look.
After hot pants come the pant-coat Zip fronted, easy fitting cat suit in traditional winter fabrics.... Notice the gathering at the bottom. The sleeves are also gathered.
Buyers were also shown some stunned evening wear--this multi-coloured flared dress is another return to the classics.
Fontana fashions also had their first showing on Sunday. Matching hats and suits are going to be one of winter's attractions.
Colours and shades mark this maxi-coat.
And for the evening, a catching reminder of the forties.
All together, the flared evening dresses that should really catch
But outside, it's a different store. It's hot, and winter fashions are far away. The girls of rome in summer are more concerned with the present. Short skirts, light slacks and hot pants are worn everywhere.
Rome's fashion designers hope to put an and to hot pants....but so far the girls are having their own way.
