    Seventy cadets graduated at the Fayadiyeh Military School near Beirut in the Lebanon on Wednesday (August 1st), in the presence of President Suleiman Franjieh. Among them were some women police inspectors who were the first women to graduate from the school.

    President Franjieh arrived with the recently appointed Prime Minister, Mr. Takieddin Solh. He participated in the ceremony of 'Giving the Sword' the mark of successful graduation.

    Lebanon, although situated at the heart of the Middle-East confrontation, maintains only a small army of 15,000. By end of 1972 Lebanon had spent GBP 20 million sterling on arms under a five year purchasing programme.

    SYNOPSIS: President Suleiman Franjieh went to the Fayadiyeh Military School near Beirut on Wednesday to witness the graduation of seventy cadets. The school was established in 1920 during the French Mandate and moved to its present site in 1945.

    The President took his seat after laying a wreath at the School's war memorial.

    He was accompanied by Mr. Takieddin Solh whom he appointed as Prime Minister last month in succession to Dr. Amin Hafez. Dr. Hafez's government resigned after failing to solve internal problems.

    The President carried out the ceremony of 'Giving the Sword', the mark of successful graduation. The cadets will join an army of fifteen thousand men, which is small in comparison with that of her Arab neighbours. lebanon is situated at the heart of the Middle-East confrontation and has long been the home of Palestinian querrillas. Israel launched a two-day attack into Lebanon last summer and earlier this year Israel commandos killed three palestinian leaders resident in Beirut. Shortly after that the army was engaged in bitter fighting with Palestinian commandos, in which at least fifty soldiers were killed. But Lebanon has generally been reluctant to use her army.
