  • Description

Sierra Leone celebrated the fourth anniversary of the founding of the Republic on Saturday (19 April).

A colourful parade was held at the capital, Freetown. Later that day, 27 people including the Prime Minister, Mr. Sorie Ibrahim Koroma, received national honours from the President at the State House.

In a nation-wide broadcast, President Siake Stevens, who has been President since the Republic was formed, said the stage was set for a march forward to a better life.

But he added that progress could not be achieved unless peace prevailed in the country. He urged the people to remain vigilant. Only a week ago, two people were killed and 72 arrested after a tribal riot on Bonthe Island, about 100 miles (160 kilometres) south of the capital.

The President also pointed out that agriculture is the backbone of the country's economy which was the reason it was given priority in the first five-year development plan.
