Arab League leaders reached a compromise solution to the future of Palestinian commandos based in southern Lebanon. The decision was reached during the final session of a three-day summit meeting tin Tunisia (Thursday 22 November). The conference also considered the present turbulence in the Moslem world caused by he siege of the United States' Embassy in Teheran, the attack on Islam's holiest shrine in Mecca and the burning of the United States Embassy in Pakistan.

SYNOPSIS: Delegations from twenty-one members of the Arab League, including fifteen heads of stats, met in the Tunis Hilton Hotel. The Arab leaders met without Egypt for the second time since President Anwar Sadat's peace accord with Israel. The United States was once again condemned for its involvement in the peace initiative. The summit's final declaration warned the Washington government that its interests in the Arab world could be harmed by such actions. The conference also undertook to establish a common political, economic and military strategy linked to their opposition to Israel.

The agreement concerning Lebanon was a major result of the conference. The Lebanese government and the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) will have joint control over the locatio of commando forces. Lebanese President Elias Sarkis accepted this compromise after dropping his demand that the League should order the commandos out of the country.
