  • Description

THERE HAS BEEN SOME EASING IN THE WEATHER OFF THE COAST OF IRELAND, FOLLOWING A PROLONGED SPELL OF GALES WHICH HAVE BEEN RAGING UP TO EIGHTY MILES AN HOUR.

THE GALES LASHED THE SOUTH WEST COAST FOR TEN DAYS WHICH PREVENTED THE RELIEF OF LIGHTSHIPS AND LIGHTHOUSE STATIONS SEVERAL MILES OFF THE COAST OF WEXFORD AND WATERFORD COUNTRIES.

FOUR SHIPS - THE GRAINVAILE, THE ATLANTA, THE ISOLDA, AND THE IRERIN - NORMALLY TOUR THE IRISH COASTS RELIEVING CREWS AND KEEPING THE LONELY LIGHTSHIPS AND LIGHTHOUSE STATIONS SUPPLIED.

WEATHER CONDITIONS EASED SUFFICIENTLY EARLIER THIS WEEK TO ENABLE HE ATLANTA TO RELIEVE THE CREW OF THE TUSKAR ROCK LIGHTHOUSE, TEN MILES OFF THE COAST OF WEXFORD COUNTY.

FOOD, WATER AND OIL WERE LOADED ABOARD SUPPLY SHIPS (SMALL LAUNCHES) WHICH FERRIED OUT THE GOODS TO THE LIGHTHOUSE.IT IS A HAZARDOUS OPERATION EVEN IN GOOD WEATHER CONDITIONS, AND MADE ALL THE MORE NECESSARY AT THIS TIME OF THE YEAR WHEN BAD WEATHER COULD CUT OFF THE LIGHTHOUSES AND LIGHTSHIPS FOR WEEKS.
