  • Description

CHEERING TANZANIANS MADE THEIR WAY THROUGH DAR-ES-SALAAM YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) DEMONSTRATING SUPPORT OF PRESIDENT NYERERE IN BREAKING OFF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH BRITAIN ON THE RHODESIAN ISSUE. IN SPITE OF THE TONE OF THE BANNERS CARRIED BY SOME OF THE MARCHERS, THE MOOD OF THE DEMONSTRATION WAS NOT VIOLENT.

ALTHOUGH THE BRITISH HIGH COMMISSION IS CLOSED, THE HIGH COMMISSIONER MR. R. FOWLER WILL NOT BE LEAVING UNTIL NEXT THURSDAY - AND THEN PROBABLY ONLY FOR NAIROBI. THE WHOLE OPERATION HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS "A MOST LEISURELY BREAKING OFF OF RELATIONS".

THE DEMONSTRATORS WERE ALSO ENCOURAGED BY THE NEWS THAT GHANA HAD ALSO BROKEN OFF RELATIONS WITH BRITAIN.
