  • Description

ITALY'S FLOOD DEATHROLL REACHED AT LEAST 68 TODAY (SUNDAY) WITH TENS OF THOUSANDS HOMELESS AND THE THREAT OF FURTHER RAIN IN THE NORTH EAST. PRESIDENT GUISEPPE SARAGAT WAS DUE TO VISIT STRICKEN FLORENCE TODAY - BUT EVEN A PRESIDENTIAL VISIT COULD BRING LITTLE CONSOLATION AGAINST THE LOSS OF SOME OF THE PRICELESS ART TREASURES WHICH HAVE ATTRACTED TOURISTS TO THE CITY FOR CENTURIES. OVER 50,000 SOLDIERS AND RELIEF WORKERS WERE TOILING IN FLOOD AREAS STRETCHING FROM THE ALPS TO SICILY TO BRING IN FOOD AND WATER, OPEN UP COMMUNICATIONS AND RESCUE MAROONED COUNTRY DWELLERS.

IN FLORENCE THE KNOWN DEATH TOLL WAS 17, AND MANY PEOPLE WERE STILL UNACCOUNTED FOR. OTHERS WERE STILL STRANDED IN THE UPPER FLOORS OF THEIR HOUSES, WAITING FOR RESCUE BY IMPROVISED CRAFT. POLICE MOUNTED SPECIAL GUARDS AGAINST LOOTING, AND WERE SEEKING 72 PRISONERS WHO ESCAPED FROM THE LOCAL JAIL.

DAMAGE TO THE PRICELESS RENAISSANCE ART TREASURES STORED IN THE MANY GALLERIES OF THE BEAUTIFUL CITY WAS REPORTED SERIOUS, ALTHOUGH IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN WORSE. MOST OF THE WORLD -FAMED PICTURES IN THE UFFIZI GALLERY WERE SAVED, THOUGH A SPOKESMAN FOR THE SUPER INTENDENCY OF FINE ARTS SAID THERE WAS DAMAGE TO MANY PAINTINGS BY LESSER ARTISTS STORED IN THE BASEMENT.

THE MAIN ART DAMAGE APPEARED TO BE IN THREE PLACES -- THE PONTE VECCHIO, THE BAPTISTRY IN THE CATHEDRAL SQUARE, AND THE SAN SALVI ABBEY. THE PONTE VECCHIO, DATING FROM 1345 AND THE ONLY BRIDGE ACROSS THE ARNO NOT BLOWN UP BY THE GERMANS WHEN THEY ABANDONED THE CITY NEAR THE END OF THE LAST WAR, WITHSTOOD THE TREMENDOUS FORCE OF THE ARNO FLOOD. BUT THE RENOWNED JEWELLERS' SHOPS ALONG THE BRIDGE ITSELF WERE SMASHED, AND PRECIOUS STONES WERE BURIED UNDER A SEA OF MUD. THE BAPTISTRY, DATING FROM THE 12TH CENTURY, WAS POUNDED BY RAGING WATERS FOR HOURS. FIVE OF THE TEN PANELS ON LORENZO GHIBERTI'S BRONZE DOOR, THE PORTA DEL PARADISO, WERE DAMAGED.

AT THE SAN SALVI ABBEY, ANDREA DEL SARTO'S 1519 PAINTING OF THE LAST SUPPER WAS SUBMERGED UNDER WATER ALONG WITH OTHER 16TH CENTURY PAINTINGS.

AS THE WATERS OF THE ARNO IN FLORENCE SUBSIDED, THE TOWN OF TRENTO IN THE SOUTHERN ALPS WAS FLOODED, AND MANY LOCALITIES IN THE NORTH EAST WERE ISOLATED. THE RIVER PO WAS FLOWING AT A DANGEROUS LEVEL, AND RIVERS IN THE VENETO AND FRIULI REGIONS HAD BURST THEIR BANKS.
