    IN TEMA ON SUNDAY THREE NEW LARGE VESSELS BUILT IN JAPAN FOR THE GHANAIAN OCEAN FISHERIES COMPANY WERE COMMISSIONED. THE VESSELS WERE NAMED AKORA, ASEBU AND SEGA, AFTER THREE RIVERS IN GHANA.

    THE COMMISSIONING CEREMONY WAS ATTENDED BY THE GHANAIAN COMMISSIONER FOR AGRICULTURE, MR J. TORTO, AND THE CHAIRMAN OF OCEAN FISHERIES LIMITED, MR. E. DADSON.

    EACH OF THE VESSELS IS MORE THAN 262 FEET (62 METRES) LONG AND WITH A STORAGE CAPACITY OF 650 TONS. THE THREE VESSELS WILL PROVIDE EMPLOYMENT FOR 200 PEOPLE. THEY WERE BUILT AT A TOTAL COST OF 5-MILLION NEW CEDIS (GBP1 3/4-MILLION STERLING).

    MR. TORTO, SPEAKING AT THE CEREMONY, SAID ONE OF THE GREATEST PROBLEMS FACING AFRICA WAS PROVIDING THE CORRECT DIET FOR THE CONTINENT'S EVER INCREASING POPULATION. THE GHANAIAN GOVERNMENT WAS DETERMINED TO DEVELOP AGRICULTURE AND FISHERIES AS ONE WAY OF CORRECTING PROTEIN DEFICIENCY.

    BEFORE THE COMMISSIONING A TRADITIONAL FETISH CEREMONY WAS CONDUCTED OVER THE VESSELS BY THE ??? CHIEF FETISH PRIEST, NAA WULOMO.

    THE BOATS WERE COMMISSIONED BY NAMA AMENFI OF THE ASEBU TRADITIONAL AREA. NANA NYARKU-EKU, OF THE AGONA TRADITIONAL AREA, AND ASAFOATSE ASIEDU AGLO OF ADA FOAH.
