    A MASSIVE PLENARY SESSION OF THE OPPOSITION CONGRESS PARTY LED BY MR S. NIJALINGAPPA, MEETING IN AHMEDABAD, YESTERDAY (21 DECEMBER) UNANIMOUSLY ENDORSED ITS MOVE TO EXPEL INDIAN PRIME MINISTER MRS INDIRA GANDHI FROM THE CONGRESS PARTY.

    MORE THAN 300,000 PEOPLE, INCLUDING 20,000 CONGRESS PARTY DELEGATES AND PARTY WORKERS, HEARD OPPOSITION CONGRESS PARTY PRESIDENT MR NIJALINGAPPA ACCUSE MRS. GANDHI OF SPLITTING THE CONGRESS -- THE PARTY THAT WON INDEPENDENCE FOR INDIA.

    HE WARNED THAT THERE WAS A DELIBERATE ATTEMPT TO IMPOSE A 'FASCIST REGIME' ON INDIA, SAYING MRS GANDHI WAS NOT FIT TO GOVERN. 'SHE HAS ENVELOPED HERSELF IN A FANTASY OF POWER,' HE SAID.

    MRS GANDHI WAS EXPELLED FROM THE CONGRESS PARTY BY MR NIJALINGAPPA AND ORGANISATIONAL CHIEFS ON 12 NOVEMBER BUT ON THE FOLLOWING DAY SHE WON A VOTE OF CONFIDENCE FROM THE MAJORITY OF MEMBERS. THE PARTY THE SPLIT INTO TWO, WITH MRS GANDHI'S PARTY KNOWN AS THE RULING CONGRESS PARTY.

    THE AHMEDABAD SESSION WAS INTENTED TO SHOW THAT MR NIJALINGAPPA'S OPPOSITION CONGRESS PARTY AND NOT THE RULING CONGRESS PARTY COMMANDED THE SUPPORT OF THE MAJORITY OF PARTY MEMBERS.

    MR S.D. MISRA, GENERAL SECRETARIAL OF THE OPPOSITION CONGRESS PARTY, ANNOUNCED AT THE SESSION THAT 2,707 OFFICIAL CONGRESS PARTY DELEGATES BUT OF A POSSIBLE 4,650, ABOUT 60 PER CENT, WERE PRESENT.
